Mr. Marcus D. Moreman

Funeral Service for LTC Marcus Duncan Moreman, Sr. U.S. Army retired, 90, of Waverly, Alabama, will be Sunday, November 25, 2018 at 2:00 pm at the Waverly United Methodist Church. Rev. Helen Walton and Rev. Frank Chappell will officiate. Burial will follow in the Waverly Cemetery with full military honors proved by the U.S. Army. The family will receive friends on Saturday, November 24, 2018 from 10:30 am to 2:00 pm at Langley Funeral Home. Col. Moreman passed away on Saturday, November 17, 2018 at East Alabama Medical Center. He was born on October 13, 1928 in Waverly. He retired from the U.S. Army in 1971 after 26 years of service in the infantry. Marcus entered the Army at the age of 16 in 1945 and left the service in 1947. After finishing Alabama Polytechnic Institute in 1950, he was recalled into the Army where he received a direct commission as a second lieutenant in Korea. Marcus later attended the Command and General Staff College and learned Russian at the Defense Language Institute. From 1968-1969, he served as a Battalion Commander in the 3rd Infantry Division in Germany, He served 2 tours of duty in Vietnam as an infantry officer where he organized and participated in 62 helicopter combat assaults. He received a number of combat awards to include the Combat Infantry Badge, Vietnamese Silver and Bronze Stars for gallantry, four U.S. Bronze Star Medals, 5 Air Medals and the Legion of Merit. Col. Moreman retired from the Army in 1971 and served as Commandant and Senior Arms Instructor at Lyman Ward Military Academy for 20 years. After departing Lyman Ward, he returned to live in Waverly where he served as Mayor from 1991-2000. He was a member of the Waverly Methodist Council, American Legion, Waverly Community Club and Waverly Town Council. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn C. Moreman of Waverly; children, Mark Moreman of Waverly, Brad Moreman of Waverly and Michele Cowhick (Mark) of Decatur; step-sons, David Garner (Kayla) of Waverly and Dewayne Garner (Carrie) of Dadeville; step-daughters, Dana Strickland of Opelika and Delisa Perkins (Scott) of Opelika; fourteen grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; nephew, Jimmy Moreman of Opelika; and a host of other nieces and nephews. Col. Moreman was preceded in death by his first wife of 47 years Lucile; his parents Otis and Thula Moreman; brothers, Otis Moreman, Jr. and James Moreman; and sister, Mary Moreman.
