Calvin Mayo Thomas, known affectionately as Mayo to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on January 10, 2025, at the age of 78. Born on October 29, 1946, Mayo was a man of intelligence, resourcefulness, and wisdom, qualities that he carried with him throughout his life and shared generously with those around him.
Mayo is survived by a loving family that includes his son, Richard (Sharie) Thomas of Camp Hill, AL; his son, James Thomas; his daughter, Dayla (Chuck) Pierce of Opelika, AL; his grandchildren, Elijah (Ashley) Thomas, Adoska (Logan) Presley, Laura Bridges, and Brooklyn Pierce; and four great-grandchildren who brought him immense joy. He also leaves behind his sister, Dolly Thomas, and his significant other, Bernice Blalock of Opelika, AL, along with a host of nieces and nephews who will miss his guidance and enduring presence. Mayo was preceded in death by his father, Forrest Mayo Thomas; his mother, Marie Thomas; and his son, Owen Thomas.
Mayo's life was a testament to his ability to apply his intellect and handiness to any challenge. He was the go-to person in the family when something needed fixing or when sage advice was needed. His hands were rarely still, as he was often found tinkering with a new project or lovingly maintaining the family home. Mayo's legacy as a wise and thoughtful man is one that will live on in the hearts and minds of his family and the many lives he touched.
In his professional life, Mayo was revered for his sharp mind and problem-solving skills. He approached his career with the same level of dedication and excellence that he did all other aspects of his life. Colleagues respected him for his fairness and ability to navigate complex situations with grace and intelligence.
Outside of work, Mayo was a beacon of knowledge and wisdom in his community. He had a way of simplifying the most complicated matters, making him an invaluable friend and neighbor. His home was often a gathering place where laughter filled the rooms, and everyone was welcome.
Mayo's wisdom extended to his role as a patriarch. He instilled in his children and grandchildren the values of hard work, integrity, and the importance of family. His lessons and love will continue to guide them as they navigate their own paths in life.
As we bid farewell to Mayo, we celebrate a life well-lived, marked by the love he shared and the wisdom he imparted. His memory will be cherished and kept alive through the stories told by those who knew him best. Mayo's impact on this world was significant, and the void left by his passing will be felt deeply by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
A life so beautifully lived deserves to be beautifully remembered. Mayo's family takes comfort in knowing that he is now at peace, and they will honor his memory by living their lives in the manner he exemplified-with kindness, intelligence, and a touch of his indomitable spirit.
As the sun sets on a life that was filled with moments of joy, learning, and love, we say goodbye to Calvin Mayo Thomas. The world is undoubtedly a better place because he was in it, and his legacy will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to have felt the warmth of his wisdom and the strength of his love.
