Charles "Charlie" Connor Johnson, age 82, of Lake Martin, passed away on Thursday, April 16, 2026, at his residence. Born on April 9, 1944, to Harold Johnson and Violet Cunningham Johnson, Charlie lived a life marked by kindness, devotion, and quiet strength. He was a Christian and an active member of Rock Springs Baptist Church, where his faith was an important part of his life and the foundation of the values he carried with him each day. Charlie was known by those who loved him as a friendly, loving, and adventurous man whose warm presence left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
Charlie pursued his education with determination and earned an associate degree from Lawrence Technological University in Southfield, Michigan. He carried the discipline and perseverance he learned through education into every part of his life. Whether at work, at home, or among friends, he was respected for his steady nature, his thoughtful manner, and the genuine care he showed to others. He had a way of making people feel welcome, and his easy smile and kind spirit reflected the best parts of who he was.
One of Charlie’s greatest joys in life was time spent on Lake Martin in his boat. He loved being out on the water, where he found peace, freedom, and happiness in the simple beauty of the lake. Those moments were among his most cherished, and they became a treasured part of the memories he created with family and friends. He also enjoyed reading and could often be found with a good book in hand, always eager to learn, reflect, and enjoy a quiet moment. At home, he found companionship in his feline buddy, Boots, who was a beloved part of his daily life.
Above all else, Charlie loved his wife and family dearly. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather whose greatest pride was the family he helped build and nurture. He is survived by his wife, Penny Johnson; daughters, Laurie Zapinski, Amy Brewer and her husband Brian, and Christi Rhoney and her husband Brian; son, C.J. Johnson and his wife Courtney; grandchildren, Shoshanna Mathews and her husband Kevin, Joshua Ward and his wife Andria, Madison Quigley and her husband Kevin, Jacob Brewer, Jackson Rhoney, Parker Rhoney, Everett Johnson, Grant Johnson, and Charlie Johnson; great-grandchildren, Tru Mathews, Sophie Mathews, Cash Ward, and Keaton Wilson; sister-in-law, Hope Sobczak and her husband Martin; brothers-in-law, James Paton and his wife Pam, and Timothy Paton and his wife Debbie.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Harold “Gene” Johnson; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, James Paton Sr. and Kay Paton; his sister-in-law, Claudia Johnson and his cousin Geraldine Cunningham.
Though his passing leaves a deep void in the hearts of those who knew and loved him, his memory will continue to live on through the many lives he touched with his love, his faith, and his gentle spirit.
Charles Connor Johnson will be remembered for the way he lived his life with sincerity and grace. He was a man who valued family, cherished friendship, and embraced each day with a loving heart and an adventurous soul. His legacy is one of devotion, kindness, and faith, and the example he set will remain a source of comfort and inspiration to all who were blessed to know him.
The family would like to express a heartfelt “Thank You” to the wonderful care given to Charlie by his caregivers Arlene Moore and Carla Bradley as well as the staff and nurses of Ivy Creek Hospice. Their loving care and kindness made the last few months brighter, bringing moments of joy and peace when they were needed most.
