Memorial Service for Col. Wesley P. Smith, 87, of Camp Hill, will be Sunday, January 22, 2017 at 2:00 pm at the Dixon All Faith Chapel of Lyman Ward Military Academy. Rev. Rod Siggers will officiate. A reception will follow the service.
Col. Smith passed away on Thursday, January 5, 2017 at East Alabama Medical Center. He was born on January 19, 1929 in Madison, Georgia to John Clayton Smith, Sr. and Annie Kidd Smith. He was a member of Camp Hill Universalist Church. He was a graduate of Southern Industrial Institute, now Lyman Ward Military Academy. He received his Bachelor of Science and Masters degree in Psychology from Auburn University. He was a U. S. Army Veteran of the Korean War.
After graduating from Auburn he returned to teach science at Lyman Ward and remained there until he retired as President. Until his death he continued to serve on the Board of Trustees for Lyman Ward. He was a past member of The National Association of Military Colleges and Schools. Col. Smith was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed many hours hunting and fishing. He was a licensed pilot, a world traveler and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Peggy Smith of Camp Hill; son, Michael Smith (Joy) of Auburn; grandchildren, Harrison, Ryan, and Katie Smith all of Auburn.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Edgar K. Smith and John C. Smith, Jr.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Wesley P. Smith Memorial Scholarship Fund, Lyman Ward Military Academy, 174 Ward Circle, Camp Hill, AL 36850.
