Fermon Stuart Cheatham, known as "Butch" to his friends and family, passed away on Saturday, December 21, 2024 at East Alabama Medical Center. Born on July 8, 1951 in Memphis, Tennessee, he was the son of Mr. Fermon Stapler Cheatham and Mrs. Maudie Keeley Cheatham. Butch faithfully attended Christ's Gospel Baptist Church of Notasulga and worked hard as a Tool & Die Maker for L&L Machine and Tool for many years. On October 15, 2002, in a little church nestled in the Smokey Mountains, he married his best friend, Shelia, and spent the next 22 years providing endless laughs, memories, and love.
Butch was a simple, happy-go-lucky country man who lived a life dedicated to his family. Nothing brought him more joy than being able to spend time with his grandchildren who lovingly called him "PawPaw." His happy place was his home where he enjoyed taking care of his cats and never missed an opportunity to take a good nap. If Butch was outside, you could find him kayaking on the river or casting a line from his boat. Fishing was always made better when his grandchildren were in the boat next to him. Butch was a loving husband, father, and Paw Paw. He was tough but soft and never faltered in his devotion to the ones he loved most.
Butch is survived by his wife, Shelia Belle Cheatham; children, Dewayne Patterson, Fermon Stuart (Kristy) Cheatham, Jr., Tiffany Walden, Jay Cheatham; grandchildren, Willow Patterson, Eli Patterson, Dusty (Amanda) Patterson, Savannah Taunton, Travis Cheatham, Johnathan Cheatham, Justin Cheatham, Ryan Cheatham, Jayton Stephens; great-grandchildren, Wrenley Taunton, Axton Patterson, Hank Patterson, Lanie Harris; brothers, Ray Buford, Rudy (Connie) Priest; sisters, Renee (James) Redden, Rickie (Mike) Norman, and Robbin (Keith) Colwell.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Stacy Walden; parents, Fermon and Maudie Cheatham; brothers, Billy Buford, Roy Buford, Timothy "Gus" Cheatham; and sisters, Julia Howard, Sheila Cheatham.
