Chief Gary Steve Freeman's Obituary
Funeral Service for Chief Gary Steve Freeman, 78, of Jacksons Gap, Alabama, will be Monday, July 27, 2026 at 11:00 am at the Chapel of Langley Funeral Home. Bro. Clint McKelvey will officiate. Burial will follow at Eagle Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Sunday, July 26, 2026 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Langley Funeral Home.
Chief Freeman passed away on July 23, 2026, at his home, leaving behind a legacy of service, friendship, and devotion to the community he loved. He was born on July 22, 1948, in Tallapoosa County to William Floyd Freeman and Florence Leach Freeman, where he would spend his life building lasting relationships and earning the respect of those who knew him.
Steve dedicated much of his life to serving others. He retired as Chief of Police in Dadeville after 35 years of faithful service to his community. Throughout his career, he was known for his steady leadership, strong sense of duty, and willingness to step in wherever he was needed. He believed that every job needed a good supervisor, and he lived that belief through his example, always ready to fill that role with responsibility and care. His commitment to public service reflected the values he carried throughout his life, and his presence made a meaningful difference in the lives of many.
Outside of his work, Steve enjoyed the simple pleasures that brought him happiness. He loved hunting and fishing, and he especially treasured time spent eating with his friends, PeeWee and John, on Friday nights and with Ms. Becky, Kebo, and Amanda on Sundays. These gatherings were more than meals to him. They were moments of fellowship, laughter, and connection that he looked forward to and cherished deeply. He also loved riding around and visiting all of Tallapoosa County, taking in the places and people that meant so much to him.
Steve was a man who valued companionship and time well spent. He enjoyed being with his friends and family, and he found joy in the everyday moments shared with those closest to him. His warm presence, easy conversation, and genuine appreciation for others made him a beloved friend and a familiar face throughout the county. He will be remembered for his loyalty, his kindness, and the pride he took in the community he served for so many years.
Those who knew Steve will remember a hardworking man with a strong sense of purpose and a generous spirit. He lived his life with dedication, humility, and a deep love for the people and places around him. His memory will continue to live on in the hearts of his friends, family, and all who were fortunate enough to know him.
He is survived by his daughter, Fran Freeman of Jacksons Gap; sister-in-law, Rita (Scotty) McKelvey of Dadeville; niece, Julie Freeman (Joey) Wright of Dadeville; nephews, John (Regina) Freeman of Dadeville, Chad (Haley) McKelvey of Dadeville, and Clint (Lindsay) McKelvey of Dadeville.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Wanda Gayle Freeman; and brother, William Larry Freeman.
