Mr. Hugh Walter Smith, known to family and friends as Hugh, passed away on July 14, 2026, in Montgomery, Alabama, at the age of 82. Born on November 6, 1943, in Lee County, Alabama, he lived a life marked by hard work, devotion to family, and a steady, generous spirit that touched everyone who knew him.
Hugh was a man who believed in doing things the right way and taking pride in a job well done. He retired from Uniroyal after 40 years of dedicated service, where he worked as a Quality Control Supervisor. Through decades of faithful employment, he earned the respect of his coworkers through his dependability, practical knowledge, and strong sense of responsibility. He was the kind of man others could count on, whether the task at hand was large or small, and he carried that same reliability into every part of his life.
Hugh was an avid outdoorsman who found great joy in the simple pleasures of life. He loved hunting and fishing, and time spent outdoors brought him peace and satisfaction. He also enjoyed cooking out, where good food and good company came together in the way he appreciated most. Whether he was gathered with family, visiting with friends, or enjoying a quiet moment outside, he valued the time and memories created in those settings.
Family was the center of Hugh’s life, and he cherished every moment spent with those he loved. He was married for 62 years, a remarkable testament to commitment, devotion, and enduring love. Throughout the years, he built a strong and lasting foundation for his family through his example of loyalty and care. He was especially proud to be a special dandaddy to his grandchildren, Ryan and Ansley, and he treasured the joy and affection they brought into his life. His love for them was deep and unmistakable, and the bond they shared will remain a lasting part of his legacy.
Hugh was also an avid Auburn fan, and he followed his team with enthusiasm and loyalty. He enjoyed collecting old cars, a hobby that reflected both his appreciation for craftsmanship and his love of things with character and history. Whether admiring a classic vehicle, talking about Auburn, or sharing stories with loved ones, he brought interest and energy to the things that mattered to him.
Hugh is survived by his wife of 62 years, Wanda Waites Smith; daughter, Tanya (Randy) Cerovsky; grandchildren, Ryan Cerovsky and Annsley Cerovsky; and sisters, Sandra Henderson and Darlene Hutson
He was preceded in death by his parents, Otis W. Smith and Elizabeth Gross Smith; and sisters, Juanita Mask, Betty Freeman, and Patricia Lawler.
Hugh Walter Smith passed through life with humility, strength, and a genuine kindness that made a lasting impression. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, devotion, and love that will be remembered with gratitude and affection. His life was one of purpose and quiet dignity, and those who were fortunate enough to know him will continue to carry his memory in their hearts.
A Celebration of Life Service for Mr. Hugh Walter Smith will be held at a later date.
