Mr. James David Copeland, known simply as James or JD, 83, of Dadeville, passed away on Tuesday, July 14, 2026 at Bethany House. He was born on September 11, 1942 in Choctaw County, Alabama to Ruben Tillman Copeland and Cora Bell Manley Copeland.
James was born on September 11, 1942, in Choctaw County, Alabama, where he began a life that would be marked by hard work, quiet generosity, and a deep appreciation for the simple joys of everyday living. He carried the values of his upbringing throughout his life, and those who knew him will remember a man who was steady, kind, and sincere in all that he did.
For 40 years, James worked as a mechanic at the James River Paper Mill, where he was respected for his skill, dependability, and strong work ethic. He took pride in doing his job well and was known as someone others could count on. His long career reflected his dedication and commitment, and he earned the admiration of coworkers and friends alike through years of faithful service.
James was a talented man with a creative spirit. He made crosses and gave them to everyone, sharing his handiwork as a meaningful expression of his care for others. His gifts were treasured not only for their craftsmanship, but also for the thoughtfulness behind them. In this way, James touched many lives with quiet acts of kindness that will be remembered for years to come.
He loved his cats and found comfort and companionship in their presence. He also enjoyed fishing, and he loved living on Lake Martin, where he could appreciate the beauty and peace of the water. The lake was a place that brought him happiness and reflected his love for a calm and familiar way of life. James also enjoyed eating at The Wharf restaurant, where he found pleasure in good food and good company.
James attended Lake Community Church, where his presence was part of the rhythm of his life and faith. His connection to the Lord and to his church community was an important part of who he was, and it reflected the values he held close throughout his life. He lived with a quiet faith and a gentle spirit that left a lasting impression on those around him.
Those who knew James will remember his warm nature, his talent, and the many ways he shared himself with others. He lived a life rooted in hard work, kindness, and appreciation for the people, places, and routines that gave him joy. His memory will remain a blessing to all who were fortunate enough to know him.
He is survived by his friend, Sallie Mason; daughters, Bridgit Gosa and Amy Nugent (Billy); former son-in-law, Johnny Gosa; grandchildren, Jessica Gosa, Shelbey Allen (Tate),and Abbey Vallery; and a host of other family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Sandra Copeland and his beloved brothers and sisters.
