Funeral services for Joe Neil Gibson, Sr. of Dadeville will be at Langley Funeral Home Chapel, Wednesday, July 3, 2013, at 1 PM. Burial will be in the Dadeville City Cemetery immediately following the service. Rev. Miles Crouch and Rev. Sonny Riggins will officiate. Visitation from 11 AM - 1 PM, Wednesday, July 3, 2013, at Langley Funeral Home.
Joe Neil Gibson, Sr., age 91 of Dadeville, died on June 30, 2013 in Alexander City, Alabama. Mr. Gibson was born in Jacksons Gap, AL on August 1, 1921 to Inda and Grady Gibson, who preceded him in death. His brother, Henry "Bittle" Gibson was killed in WWII. He is survived by a sister, Mary Reddick, of Leesburg, GA, daughters Betty Baker (David) of Lakemont, GA, Kathy Miller of Auburn, son Joe “Bubba” Gibson (LuCile) of Dadeville, grandsons Brett Baker of Portland, OR, Ward Miller (Cortney) of Mobile, Drew Miller of Auburn, Neil Gibson (Mary Jane) of Calera, and Tyler Gibson of Newnan, GA. The family would like to thank his many friends, especially his loving friend and caretaker, Brenda Crayton.
After attending School at Jacksons Gap, Mr. Gibson attended Tallapoosa County High School (TCHS) where he played center on one of Dadeville's greatest football teams. Following high school, he attended Auburn University. In 1942, Joe married his high school sweetheart, the former Kathrine Norris, who passed away in 2006. Soon after their marriage, Joe enlisted in the Army Air Corp where he served as an aerial engineer in the 435th Troop Carrier Group. He served in 5 major European campaigns including the D-Day invasion and the Battle of the Bulge. He was highly decorated, receiving numerous commendations and medals from both the U.S. and French governments.
Following the war, Joe returned to Dadeville where he continued to live for the remainder of his life. He was a retired postal employee, a lifelong member of Pleasant Grove Church of Christ, a proud supporter of Dadeville High School athletics, Dadeville Quarterback Club, and other civic groups. Joe was a third generation fox hunter and a member of the National Foxhunters Hall of Fame. He proudly served on the Dadeville City Council for three terms where he oversaw the parks and recreation program. In recent years, Joe worked for the Tallapoosa County 911 administration. He was proud to serve a county that he knew and loved so well.
Joe will be remembered by many friends and family for his love of people, his fun loving personality, his generous spirit, his patriotism, his passion for sports and the outdoors, and his Christian faith.
Mr. Gibson proudly served his country and believed we live in the greatest place on earth. As we celebrate our nation's birthday this week, the Gibson family asks that you pause and honor all of those who have served.
