John Tharon Thompson, a passionate, adventurous, and courageous man, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 19, 2026, surrounded by his family and loved ones.
John was born on November 9, 1960, in Camp LeJeune, North Carolina, to Gerald Hill Thompson Sr. and Marjorie Lynda Phillips Schmidt. He grew up with a strong sense of family, duty, and faith that shaped the course of his life and the many relationships he built along the way. Those who knew him will remember a man who lived with purpose, loved deeply, and faced life with steady determination and a generous spirit.
He graduated from Bibb Graves High School in Millerville, Alabama, and later received an associate degree from Faulkner University. Education was important to John, and he carried the discipline and values he learned throughout his life into every role he fulfilled. He was a man who believed in hard work, personal responsibility, and setting an example for others through his actions.
John joined the United States Army National Guard and devoted 33 years of honorable service to his country. Through years of commitment and perseverance, he rose to the rank of Master Sergeant and retired in 2013. His military career reflected his loyalty, leadership, and willingness to serve something greater than himself. He took great pride in his service, and those who served alongside him respected his strength, dependability, and calm resolve.
Faith was also an important part of John’s life. He was a Christian, and his beliefs guided the way he treated others and the way he approached each day. He was known for his steadfast character and for the quiet strength that came from living according to his convictions. His life was a reflection of devotion to God, family, and country.
John enjoyed many simple pleasures that brought him joy and allowed him to share time with those he loved. He especially enjoyed hunting, fishing, and woodworking, pursuits that reflected both his patience and his appreciation for craftsmanship and the outdoors. He was also a devoted supporter of his children and grandchildren, and he rarely missed an opportunity to attend their sporting events and cheer them on. He was a loyal Alabama football fan and an enthusiastic Atlanta Braves supporter, and he found great enjoyment in following both teams.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Jayne Thompson; his sons, Jonathan Dwayne Thompson and his wife, Robyn, and James “Jimmy” Tharon Thompson; his daughter, Lindsey “Nikki” Nicole Thompson; his grandchildren, Braxton Lackey, Brody Wortham and his wife, Ashton, Brantlee Wortham, and Bryer Thompson; and his brother, Gerald Hill Thompson Jr. and his wife, Donna. John cherished his family and took great pride in each of them. His love for them was evident in the way he supported, encouraged, and remained present in their lives.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Steven Dwayne Thompson; his grandparents, John H. and Mavis Thompson; and his grandmother, Marjorie Phillips. Though his absence leaves a deep void, his family finds comfort in the many memories they shared and in the lasting influence of his life.
John Tharon Thompson will be remembered for his unwavering love of family, his faithful service, and the strength of his character. He lived a life marked by dedication, integrity, and heart. His legacy will continue through the lives of those who knew and loved him, and his memory will be treasured always.
