Mr. Mark Donald Kosmak's Obituary
Mark Donald Kosmak, passed away unexpectedly on March 30, 2026, in Dadeville, Alabama, at the age of 63.
He was born on October 28, 1962, in Los Angeles, California, and throughout his life he carried with him the spirit of hard work, loyalty, humor, and service. Mark was a man who made an impression wherever he went, not because he sought attention, but because he lived in a way that naturally drew people to him. He was selfless, handy, and funny, and he used those gifts every day in the way he cared for others and approached life.
After graduating Burbank High School, Mark joined the United States Air Force where he worked as a mechanic and crew chief on the C-5 and C-141 aircraft. His service took him to Greece and Turkey. After serving his Country Honorably for four years, he was diagnosed with stage four terminal cancer. Given six months to live, he was offered treatment through the Veterans Administration as an experimental patient. He accepted and began treatment in Atlanta, Georgia. He was just 30 years old and somehow, he beat the odds and survived. While on disability for his cancer treatment, Mark couldn’t just sit back and do nothing. Utilizing his mechanical abilities, he began learning marine mechanics and went to work for Mitchell’s Marine where he was sent to formal training in Outboard engines. On the side, he took pride in his work as a Pit Crewman for the Bama Boys Top Alcohol Drag Racing Team where he took immense joy participating one of his favorite sports. From there Mark started his own Marine Repair Shop. After decades of back breaking mechanical work, he changed gears and went to work for the Tallapoosa County Engineers Office on the road and maintenance crew. He took pride in being able to fix just about anything, and there was little that could not be improved by his steady hands and practical mind. He loved to tinker, and if something was broken, Mark was the one people wanted nearby. His skill, patience, and willingness to help made him dependable in every setting, whether he was at work, at home, or lending a hand to a neighbor or friend.
One of Mark’s greatest joys was Lake Martin, a place he loved deeply. He found peace and happiness there, and it held a special place in his heart throughout his life. He also loved kids, music, and animals, and those interests reflected the warmth and gentleness that so many people saw in him. Mark had a way of connecting with people of all ages, and he especially enjoyed mentoring youth, who were often drawn to his humor and easygoing nature.
Mark never met a stranger. Once you met him, you were a friend, and that was the kind of man he was to the core. He was always doing for others, often putting the needs of those around him before his own. He had a great sense of humor and was known as the life of the party, bringing laughter and energy into every room he entered. His presence was comforting, his personality unforgettable, and his friendship loyal and genuine.
For more than 30 years, Mark served faithfully with the Union Volunteer Fire Department. He was a first responder who gave of himself in service to others, and he answered that call with courage, commitment, and heart. His years with the department reflected the kind of man he was, one who believed in helping his community and standing ready when others needed him most. His service was a source of pride, and his fellow firefighters and neighbors knew they could count on him. He was also a member of the Lions Club of Reeltown, highlighting his immense sense of service to his community.
Mark was a fighter in every sense of the word. He beat cancer twice, at stage 4, and his strength through those battles was a testament to his determination and resilience. He faced hardship with grit and courage, never losing the humor and spirit that defined him. Even in difficult times, he remained Mark, steadfast and full of life.
He loved Taco Bell, grilling, and cooking for everyone, and he took joy in sharing good food with the people he cared about. Key West, Florida, was his favorite place on earth, a destination that brought him happiness and a sense of escape. He also enjoyed NASCAR and Alabama football, following both with enthusiasm and pride. These interests were part of the rhythm of his life and the many ways he found enjoyment in everyday moments. Mark will be remembered for his generous heart, his quick wit, his ability to fix what was broken, and his unwavering devotion to others. He lived a life of service, humor, and strength, and he leaves behind memories that will be cherished by all who knew him. His legacy will live on in the countless lives he touched through his kindness, his work, and his example.
Mark is survived by his mother, Dorothy T. Kosmak; brother, John Matthew (Veronica) Scott of San Diego, CA; sisters, Corey Aumann (David) Hallmark, Betty J. (BJ) Kosmak, and Molly Kosmak Parker, all of Dadeville, AL; special friend, Dawn M. De La Cruz of Dadeville, AL; nieces and nephew, Kodie L. Rodman, Robbie (Samantha) Scott, and Natalie Scott; great nephews and nieces, Aunts, and a host of other family members and many friends.
