Preston Baker passed away on Saturday, December 2, 2023 at Baptist Medical Center in Montgomery. He was born on August 23, 1936 in Macon County, Alabama to Walter Baker and Beatrice Stringfellow Baker. In his life, Preston learned many traits and skills that would develop him into a "jack of all trades." He was the man who could fix anything for anyone. This often extended towards fixing things around the home, around the church, or any problem his grandchildren brought to him. Professionally, he was a plumber, a union pipefitter, and member of the Local 91.
Preston was a known perfectionist who loved piddling in his garage. This combination made him quick to remind you that you better not misplace his tools. In his down time, he enjoyed watching Old Western classics, NASCAR, and Fox News. Preston was notably one of the most active 87 year olds around with a witty personality to match. His heart, confidence, and wisdom provided the space for friends and family to talk to him about anything, to which he had a respond for everything. Preston a devout Christian man who served as a faithful member of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church where he loved his church family and his pastor, Rev. Jimmy Allen, whom he considered his best friend.
Above all, Preston was a loyal family man and known as the "Rock" that held everyone together. His family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, will always remember how their "PawPaw" was there for them no matter what. "The strength of a man is his character. A strong man is a great man of wisdom who understands, his top priority is to his family." -Ellen J. Barrier
Preston is survived by his wife of almost 50 years, Janice Baker; daughter, Sonya (Ken) Miller; son, Paul (Jennifer) Talton; daughter-in-law, April Baker; grandchildren, Seth Wilson, Ashley Gossett, Madison (Cody) Deason, Corrie (Michael) Swann, Nick (Haley) Talton, Chloee Baker, Kole Baker, Kyler Baker, Kameron Sargeant; great-grandchildren, Breeley Gossett, Brooks Gossett, Bennett Deason, Kenleigh Deason, Parker Talton, Adalyn Talton; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his son, Brennon Baker; parents, Walter and Beatrice Baker; brothers, Charles Baker, William Baker; and sister, Margie Ray.
