Aunt Ruth passed away on Tuesday, February 15, 2022. She was born on October 28, 1932 in Dadeville, Alabama to Jack Lockett and Myrtie Barnes Lockett.
Everyone and I mean everyone called her Aunt Ruth, but for the family she was our “Grandmother”.
Ruth Lockett was an amazing and strong woman. In the early 1950's she graduated from what was then Alabama Polytechnical School where she played on the collegiate volleyball team. She was over 6 feet tall in her prime. She taught school at both the high school and junior college level. Later she would become the comptroller for the Alabama Department of Education where she retired after 40 years. She lived most of her life in the house she was born. She carried political influence in Tallapoosa County and though you would not know it by outward appearances she was a woman of great means.
She was the lay leader of her church for many years and served on multiple denominational committees. Her spiritual influence will last for generations to come.
The world was her oyster and she traveled and saw most of it. Her father and brother were decorated soldiers in WWI and WWII respectively, which gave her a lot of pride. Her voice carried great weight and she was wise and prudent in its use. She never married, but we know she had more than one great love in her life. She on multiple occasions chose her family over marriage and did not regret it. For an unmarried woman, she had a wealth of grands and great grands. She was a proud supporter of all Dadeville Athletics and was a mainstay at all events, where her family was involved.
Proverbs 31:30
Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing,
But a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised.
She is survived by her nieces, Christy Harrison and Martha J. Lockett; nephew, Barnes Lockett (Donna); niece, Jackie L. Cox (Bryan); great nephews, Chad Harrison (Kathleen), Brett Harrison, and Matt Harrison (Dianne); great nieces, Geni Abernathy (Jason) and Brandy Lockett (Zack); great nephews, Michael Eaton (Heather) and Ashlee Powell (Lauren); great niece, Serrah Alise Powell; twenty-seven great great nieces and nephews; and one great great great nephew.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Ralph Barnes Lockett, Sr.; and nephew, Don Harrison.
