Stan was born November 12th, 1942 in Jasper, AL. His parents were Leo and Ruth Merrett. While in high school, he worked at the local airport and earned his pilot's license. After graduation in 1961 from Walker County High School and two years of college, he transferred to Auburn University where he graduated in 1966 with a degree in aeronautical engineering. 10 days after graduation, he married Pat Scroggins. They were married for 59 years. They moved to Seattle, WA where he worked for Boeing. While with Boeing, he worked on the 737, 707 and 747. The call of the South was strong. As soon as he could he went to work for Lockheed Martin in Georgia where he helped design the C-130 and the C-5A. Frequent trips were made to Tallassee and Lake Martin. He and Pat were excited when Neptune came to town in 1972. Stan held various positions in his 39 years with Neptune. During this time, he designed their home which they built on Lake Martin. He developed a love for firefighting and joined Friendship Fire Dept and Tallassee Fire Department. He joined Union Fire Dept when it was formed in 1982. He remained an active member until his health made it impossible. He loved teaching and trained firemen all over Alabama, Georgia, and Florida. In 1991, the Tallapoosa County 911 was formed. Stan was elected to treasurer, a position he held for 35 years. While at Neptune, Stan began to design products for rural fire departments to get water out of lakes, streams, and underground tanks. He retired from Neptune in 2011. After a year, he started his own company providing fire products to rural fire departments across the country.
He is survived by his wife Pat Scroggins Merrett, three sons Keefe (Tammy), Ashley (Michele), Ryan (Monica), 4 grandchildren Tristan Young (Chase), Luke and Morgan Merrett, Owen Murphy, and great grandson Hank Young.
