Funeral service for Mr. Walker Ted Newman, 81, of Opelika and formerly of Tallapoosa County and Long Beach, CA, will be Monday, November 2, 2015 at 11:00 am at the Chapel of Langley Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Fairfax Cemetery at 2:00 pm CST. The family will receive friends on Monday, November 2, 2015 from 9:30 am to 10:30 am at Langley Funeral Home.
Mr. Newman passed away on Tuesday, October 27, 2015 at his residence. He was born on May 8, 1934 in Tallapoosa County, Alabama to Raymond Hester Newman, Sr. and Margaret Ernestine Dabbs Newman. As a child he worked in his Father’s café in the Dadeville area and later in the textile mills. He was a star football player in high school. He was an avid bridge player and golfer. Mr. Newman would be seen daily at the Waffle House and in neighborhood grocery stores in Opelika. He kept his mind sharp with crossword and Sudoku puzzles.
He is survived by his nieces, Jennifer Newman of Glendale, CA. and Jessica Huot of Carnesville, GA.; and half-sister, Angela Kay Gribbin of Long Beach, CA.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Nathan "Sonny" Newman and Raymond Hester Newman, Jr.
