I am so sorry to hear of Mr. William Moon's passing. Mr. Moon came into my life when I was in the seventh or eighth grade at Vernon High School, Vernon, Florida. He had just graduated from Troy State Teacher's College. His primary concern for us students was to be as knowledgeable in history and math as possible. My love of history was because of his influence with that love remaining with me to this day. His enthusiasm was contagious to us students. He was a great educator and mentor of many students during his teaching career.
He recognized some potential in me and constantly reminded me that there was more education in store for me after graduating from high school. After graduation, I had exhausted my efforts to finance that first year of college. Before the fall session began, he and Ms. Lottie Dykes drove to Chipola College in Marianna to pursue some method of financing for my attendance. On their return trip, they came by the house and Mr. Moon informed my father and me that they had arranged for me to have a work scholarship. That is how my first year of college was financed.
Down through the years as I continued my college education and work career, I often remembered both Mr. Moon and Ms. Dykes for their interest in that poor young country girl. It has meant a lot to me.
