Paul Hayes
I want to express my condolences to all of George's family. Am sure you know thst you have lost a good man. I have known George during and since our days at Hueytown High School and we roomed at the same place in Auburn for awhile.
While at Auburn I learned something unique about George. On one occasion I went down the hall to his room and was shocked when I entered the room. There on the table in the middle of the room was a Chevrolet V8 engine and George was tinkering with it. I've never seen that aywhere before or since. But I learned that George could solve any problem and would find a way.to do it!
George's mind was creative and he often expressed new things to ponder on Facebook. I usually opposed his thoughts since I leaned Democratic and he was staunchly Republican. We often argued about those ideas but respected each other. Abut 1-2 months ago he wrote a long comment about his belief that our HHS class was smart to be so healthy that we had lost less than 50% of our classmates when we reached our 80s. That was his only statistic and there was no similar data from other classes.I wondered why he claimed that when it had very little evidence. Then I was shocked soon afterward that he had metastatic pancreatic cancer in an advanced stage. He must have known something was wrong in his body and had death on his mind. Most of us do in our 80s and we deal with it the best way we can. I thought of that engine in his college room when he was fixing it, and believe if he had medical training he would have solved the mystery of pancreatic cancer for the betterment of mankind.
I'm glad for knowing him all these years and to have him for a friend all that time thru tolerance of disagreements and a common love of good music.Rest in peace, George.
